Prattware English pottery plaques "Jack on a Cruise" late 18th century

Reference: 7981

Dated: c. 1790 to 1800 England

A very rare pair of relief molded plaques Jack on a Cruise decorated in underglaze pratt colours. Jack the sailor looks admiringly at a passing lass carrying a brolley who is well attired with a large hat with ribbons and a hooped dress with an apron and skirt. Prints of Jack on a cruise are often captioned " Avast there! Back your main topsail" a comment which Jack may have made to the passing beauty. Both plaques were made with two pierced holes for hanging and a satisfying delight they have survived together as a pair for over 200 years.
