A Staffordshire pottery pearlware pitcher named and dated David Hoult Middlewich Cheshire 1800

£2850

Dated: 1800 Staffordshire England

This rare, documentary, pearlware-glazed pitcher, dated 1800, is of elegant pear-shaped form with a spreading circular base. It is finely decorated in enamel and features a lively narrative scene.

On the front, two men are depicted walking toward a stagecoach drawn by horses. The younger man strides ahead, turning back to address his companion with the words, “I wish you good day, sir.” Behind him, the older man follows at a slower pace, mopping his brow and replying, “Get on, get on — I’ll overtake in time.” Above the figures is the inscription: David Hoult, Middlewich, Cheshire, 1800.

The reverse continues the story. Here, the older man is seated inside the carriage, while the younger man rides exuberantly on top. The coach, highlighted in yellow with black lettering, bears the route inscription: London Liverpool Expedition through Birmingham.

At the front, the coachman sits aloft, brandishing his whip above a team of four black horses in motion, completing this charming and humorous narrative scene.
