This impressive pottery pearlware glazed figure represents a lion with a paw resting on a sphere whilst standing on a faux marble base and was made at the Staffordshire Potteries in the early 19th century. The enamel colors, decoration, and modeling are exceptionally well executed. Lions are England's national symbol and were a popular subject, although the paw resting on a ball feature is thought to be inspired by the Lions at the Loggia die Lanzi in Florence.

Dimensions: 7.75 inches high, 11 inches wide

Current Condition: In good condition, a small chip at the tip of the outstretched tongue has been restored.
