English earthenware slip glazed puzzle jug dated 1776 with initials I R.

This notable English  18th-century pottery puzzle jug features a boars head spout and is topped with two birds on the rim by the handle. The handle has an interesting lower terminal with pierced decoration. The front of the jug is inscribed with the date 1776 under the initials  I R. The birds and the boar's head eyes are made from pipe clay separately applied.. There are iron streaks in the lustrous lead glaze from the firing process.

Current Condition: Unrestored showing signs of historical wear in accord with age and use.
