North Devon earthenware slip scraffito decorated pottery harvest jug circa 1850 period.

Dated: 1850 Bideford Devon England

A fine earthenware lead glazed slip decorated harvest jug. The red clay bulbous body has a short neck which is pinched to form a pouring lip.The handle is modelled with a thumb rest and a wonderful scroll terminal at the base. The slip applied on a light caramel coloured ground, decorated in scraffito, on the front with a ship under full sail flying the Union Jack, the sea with a row of five fishes above two anchors, on one side a mariners compass,sun,stars and moon motifs, the other side profusely decorated with birds and flowers. The attention to detail such the smiling sun and the depiction of the man in the moon are compelling and warming features. The jug is a stunning example of slipware ,the scraffito work is very expertly applied to this exceptional piece. Attributed to the John Philips Hoyle Worskshop in Bideford Devon.

Another very similar jug is located in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge England which formed part of the Glaisher bequest, and illustrated in Bernard Rackham's catalogue page 13 Volume 1 ref 75.Published in 1935
