The pottery pearlware pitcher is painted blue and decorated with an unusual additional feature of applied deep ochre. Under the spout, the piece documents the name, town, and date for John Johnson, Bedworth, 1794. (Bedworth is a town near Coventry, England. John was born, according to records, in 1733 in Bedworth.) The detailed hand decoration is in the chinoiserie style; one side depicts a figure holding a parasol standing on a bridge in a garden with a fence and building. The reverse shows an elaborate image of houses and pagodas in garden settings and birds in flight.
