Description
This pearlware-glazed pottery table-base figure group, titled “Teetotal,” is attributed to the Obadiah Sherratt Pottery of Staffordshire. It represents a particularly rare variant, distinguished by its uncommon base, which differs from the more frequently encountered table-base form.
The composition is both intricate and evocative. Framed by two castle turrets and flanked by trees, the scene depicts a contented family: a couple seated on bright yellow high-backed chairs, with a baby between them. They gather around a neatly laid table set with a teapot, sugar basin, spoon, two cups and saucers, and a cake presented on a dish—an image of domestic harmony.
A companion figure, titled “Ale Bench,” was also produced. In contrast, it portrays an intoxicated couple in conflict, offering a moralizing counterpoint to Teetotal.
