This Staffordshire pottery pearlware glazed figure shows the celebrated mathematician and scientist Sir Isaac Newton standing against a globe while holding a telescope. A banner below the globe rests on two large books with the date 1680; this relates to Newton's sighting by a telescope of the comet C/1680 V1, also called the Great Comet of the 17th century. The figure is imposing with striking modeling and good quality decoration and fine colored enamels associated with the Ralph Wood Pottery.

Dimensions: 12.5 inches high

Current Condition: Restored telescope, hand and to a break at the left shoulder.
